Story Details

There have been many collections of Maupassant’s stories in English and it can sometimes be difficult determining which ones we’ve read, especially when different translators give different titles to the same source story. I have also noticed that Maupassant sometimes gave the same name to different stories, e.g. Clair de Lune, L’Enfant etc. So in an attempt to identify which stories are one and the same we have listed below the original French title together with the original date of publication and any identified titles in English.

If a translation exists in the thirteen volume set available on Project Gutenberg (PG) called The Entire Original Maupassant Short Stories by Guy de Maupassant then that is the first English title quoted. If a different translation exists with the same title then the volume is identified by just a code in square brackets, e.g. [SS.12]. If the subsequent English titles are different then they are given together with the code in square brackets.

Each story is identified with the code in the square brackets. The key for the codes are listed below but more details of the story collections can be found on the Short Story Collections in English page.

Although the PG collection claims to contain all of Maupassant’s stories it is worth noting that it has 180 stories whereas the French collection, titled Tous les Contes et Nouvelles de Maupassant claims to contain 320 stories.

Anyone who is reading English translations will also have to contend with the problem of Fake Maupassants which crop up especially in older collections.

  1. Given that the PG title implied that it was the ‘entire’ short stories of Maupassant I wasn’t expecting to find so many that weren’t included in it – 17 so far and still counting. I wonder if, instead, the list should be by French title first and then attribute English titles? What do others think?

  2. Ok. I’ve changed it to show the French title first. It was getting so messy trying to match everything to the PG stories. I thnk this is better. I’ve still got to get more dates and titles though.
